Melody ran past with a bunch of other kids, all screaming and laughing and all in all, making a god awful noise. Kevin glared after them with a scowl. Then he turned his disapproving gaze to mother. She was smiling faintly at the children. She looked at her son, still smiling. Kevin felt the frown go and make room for a smile. They were standing side by side, he and Demi, like they had been trained to do. Demi wasn’t as tall anymore, he had grown nearly half a head taller and his growth wasn’t even starting properly yet. He stepped to mother’s embrace, putting his head under her chin and squeezing tight. She petted his hair. She had always loved that hair, like fire. Kevin pulled away and started running towards the training hall with his sister. They had been delayed. They were late.
It was the last time she ever smiled at them.
